After Mera left the hut, Ares made sure Lyra was comfortable before going out to find Ronan and the others.

He found them by a collection of rum barrels someone had managed to take out of Asenghi.

Ares guessed it was Omar.

“Hey, Ares,” greeted Ronan, jumping up from his perch on a large rum barrel. “How’s Lyra?”

“She’s going to be okay. The worst is over, and her fever broke last night,” Ares said with a sigh of relief.

“Thank the dragons,” smiled Saraphina. “Poor girl’s been through hell and back as it is. She didn’t deserve this.”

Ares shook his head. “No, she didn’t, but we can make sure that nothing like this ever happens again. To Lyra or anyone else.”

“How do you suggest we do that?” asked Cyrus, scratching his ash-smeared face and the dark stubble collecting on his chin.

“We kill Fyku Zimorae, take back Asenghi, and help Mera and her friends kill the witch queen of the east before she can hurt anyone else.” Ares turned to Cyrus with a raised eyebrow. “Speaking of Mera, she asked me to make sure you leave the old ones alone.”

“Your sister keeps weird company,” argued Cyrus, not even bothering with anything else Ares had just said.

Ares glared at him. “I don’t care what you think of them. Just don’t beat them up.”

Cyrus huffed. “Such a bossy little cuss,” he muttered. “Always have been.”

“C’mon, Cy,” groaned Omar. “Listen to the kid, would ya? He’s gotten us this far, hasn’t he?”

“Perhaps,” grunted Cyrus. “Still think this island is full of a bunch of old nuts and mindless children.”

“Would you stop flapping your gums about whatever and listen to Ares?” Saraphina’s comment got Cyrus to shut his mouth—at least for the time being.

“So, what do you guys think? Want to go kill a cursed queen?” asked Ares, looking over each of his friends.

“Well, I’m in,” grinned Ronan, crossing his arms. “I’m dying to get my hands on the man who disturbed my poker game.”

Ares laughed and clapped Ronan on the back with a smile of gratitude.

“I’m in too,” agreed Cyrus.

“I think you can count on all of us being there,” said Saraphina.

Omar nodded in agreement.

Ares sighed. “Okay then, I guess that means The Thieves of Asenghi have officially joined the war.”
